How to Build Brand Equity in Your Small Business (and Why That Matters)
/If you’re in business, you already have a brand. Whether you’ve been paying attention to it or not.
Once you know this, the next obvious question is what you should do about it.
In this article, we’re going to explore the practical, foundational work that helps your build your brand.
The work that will change how you show up, how you make decisions, and how your customers experience your business.
Because brand equity isn’t built through a campaign. It isn’t built through a rebrand, a new website, or a viral moment.
It’s built through foundations.
And these foundations that build brand equity, are the ones that will create value in your business long before you see them translated directly into your bottom line.
Brand equity is the result of alignment
Before we get into the how, let’s get clear on what we’re actually building.
Brand equity is the value your brand holds in the minds of your customers. It’s the trust they have in you. The loyalty they feel. The reason they choose you over someone cheaper, someone louder or someone easier to find.
And the businesses that build it consistently and sustainably, aren’t always the ones with the biggest budgets or the best marketing.
It’s the ones who are deeply aligned with their customer.
They know who they serve. They know what they believe in. And they know how those two things connect. Everything they do flows from that alignment and their customers feel it.
That feeling is brand equity.
And it accumulates over time. Every consistent interaction, every values-aligned decision, every experience that makes a customer feel seen compounds your brand equity.
The foundations are what make that possible.
When you’re building brand equity, you should start with your Tribe
The first, and most important thing above all others is this - know who you serve.
Not in a surface-level, demographic sense. Not “women aged 35–55 in metropolitan areas.”
I mean really know them.
Understand how they see the world. What they care about. What keeps them up at night. What they’re reaching for. What makes them feel like they belong.
You can’t build a strong brand without putting your customer at the heart of it.
Your brand story is the story your customer tells themselves about how your brand fits into their life.
If you don’t understand their life — their values, their aspirations, their frustrations — you can’t possibly shape that story in a meaningful way.
This is why Tribe is such an important pillar of Brand Story Strategy. It’s the lens through which everything else should be built.
When you know your Tribe deeply, you can align your why with their why. And that alignment is powerful. It shifts your customer from buyer to advocate.
That shift, from transaction to belonging, is where brand equity lives.
Build your brand on shared values
Once you know your Tribe, the next most important thing you can do is get clear on your brand values.
Not a list of words that sound good on a website. Not “integrity, innovation, excellence.” I’m talking about the things you genuinely believe in. The principles that drive how you make decisions. The things you would never compromise on, even when it’s inconvenient.
Here’s why this matters so much: the brands that build real loyalty are the ones whose values align with the values of their customer.
When a customer finds a brand that believes what they believe, something clicks. They don’t just like the product. They feel understood. They feel represented. They feel like they belong.
Seth Godin would say - People like us, do things like this.
That sense of belonging is brand advocacy in its rawest form.
And brand advocacy is brand equity you can actually feel. In word of mouth, in referrals, in customers who defend you when something goes wrong and come back even when something better comes along.
You build it by being clear on your values, and then living them. In every decision, every communication, every customer experience, consistently, over time.
Using your customer’s voice to build your brand
The answers to most of what you need to build your brand already exist.
They’re just sitting in conversations you haven’t had yet (or haven’t actively listened to).
Throughout the Brand Story Strategy process, I use voice of customer and customer interviews at every stage. Not just to understand the Tribe, but to build every element of the strategy.
What words do your customers use to describe you? What problem did they have before they found you, and how do they describe the change? What made them choose you over someone else? What would they say to a friend who asked why they should work with you?
That language - the actual words your customers use - is a map to your brand. It tells you what’s already resonating. What’s already creating connection.
When we hone in on that voice and weave it back through your brand strategy, the brand stops being what you hypothesise it is, and becomes what it actually is to the people it serves.
That alignment is what makes a brand feel authentic. And authenticity is what makes it stick.
Brand equity takes time. But there are other wins for your effort too.
Brand equity takes time. There is no shortcut for showing up consistently and in alignment over months and years. You have to put in the work over time to build brand equity.
But that doesn’t mean you won’t see some immediate changes when you put in the effort of foundational brand work like Brand Story Strategy.
The first thing you’ll notice? You change.
The clarity and confidence that comes from knowing your Tribe, your values, your differentiators and your purpose is immediate. It changes how you show up. It changes how you make decisions. It changes how you talk about your business, whether that’s in a pitch, at a networking event, in a piece of content, in a proposal.
Then you’ll notice a whole heap of other things change for the better too.
You stop second-guessing your message because you know what you stand for and who you’re standing for.
You stop attracting the wrong customers because you’re no longer trying to appeal to everyone.
You start creating marketing with purpose. Choosing the right channels, the right messages and the right stories, because you have a strategy to guide you, not just a gut feeling.
This is the first payoff. Not a metric. Not a sales number. A felt shift in how you operate. And it is the thing that makes everything else possible, because consistency — the engine of brand equity — becomes natural when you’re clear on who you are.
Brand equity is built one consistent action at a time
Every single interaction your customer has with your brand is either building trust or breaking it.
Every email that sounds like you. Every social post that reflects your values. Every customer experience that delivers on what you promised. Every time you show up in a way that makes your ideal customer feel seen is a deposit towards building brand equity.
And those deposits accumulate.
Over time, the customer who made one purchase becomes a loyal customer. The loyal customer becomes an advocate. The advocate brings you more of the right people, who become loyal customers, who become advocates.
This is the brand equity cycle. And it doesn’t start with a campaign. It starts with foundations.
When you know your Tribe. When you’re clear on your values. When your brand personality comes through consistently in everything you say and do. When your differentiators are understood and communicated. When your vision gives your business a direction that your customers can believe in alongside you.
That’s when the cycle starts.
And once it starts, it builds a momentum all of its own.
The best way to build Brand Equity, is with Brand Story Strategy.
The six pillars of Brand Story Strategy - Tribe, Vision, Mission, Values, Differentiators and Personality - are the foundations of everything I’ve described in this article.
You will eventually need them all, but the best place to start is with understanding your tribe, and being clear on your values.
These two things will help you start to create a brand built on purpose, and in alignment with who you’re trying to serve, and why you do what you do. That alignment is the seed of your brand story strategy. And your brand story strategy is the foundation of your brand equity.
Start there.
Build deliberately.
Show up consistently.
That’s how brand equity is built.
